So today I have subscribed to the new Warhammer Conquest magazine.
The magazine is probably not aimed at people like me who have been in the hobby for years, but I’m interested to see what the magazine contains. After all, I’m a sucker for all things Games Workshop.
So far there is only a glimpse at the first 4 issues and not much information. It’s worth pointing out now that these magazines will only be available in the UK.
So, why sign up to a magazine that’s not aimed at you and you don’t know what’s in it?
Well the short answer is value for money. While £7.99 per issue (of which there is 1 per week) make this sound pretty expensive, the starting 4 issues all come with easy to build models and at least one pot of paint. That makes each issue worth at least £12.50.
The first issue is even better value at only £1.99, comes with 3 Space Marines, 3 pots of paint and a paint brush. All of that for less than the cost of a pot of Abaddon Black!
Issue 2 is also at a cheaper rate of only £4.99.
It will be interesting to see what future issues hold, but apparently they aim for most issues to come with easy to build models. I imagine they may send some of the older starter set models as the easy to build range isn’t very vast (certainly not 80 issues worth) and I cant see them putting an easy to build Redemptor Dreadnought on the front cover.
There are also some free gifts to collect when you subscribe, such as a mug, A2 poster, a binder with dividers, a free issue, an art book and the Citadel paint handle. In order to receive them you need to have subscribed for a good number of issues. The paint handle for example comes on your 7th delivery (so your 7th month of subscribing).
I think it’s unlikely I will continue subscribing to this for very long, but it will really depend on how good the actual magazine itself is. But from what I can see, the magazine is an introduction to the world of Warhammer 40,000, a bit of background info on a specific faction, painting guides for the included models and gaming basics. All things that are probably covered better in White Dwarf. Having said that, Hatchette Partworks previous Warhammer 40,000 release (Warhammer 40,000 Legends books) is in my opinion, very good quality and I’m very pleased that I signed up to it.
