Kill Team 2018

Kill Team 2018

Games Workshop has just announced a new version of Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team.

My initial reaction to this was my normal “Hell Yeah!”, but on reflection, I’m a little less excited the more I think about it.

While the idea of skirmish 40k is one I am all over (especially with a roleplaying element to it), the fact that this version of Kill Team apparently doesn’t use the 40k rules, for me, is a bit of a bummer.

I was looking forward to a Kill Team that uses the 8th Edition rules but maybe had a few additional rules thrown in for specialists.

A skirmish game that uses 40k models but non-40k rules, I’ve already got Shadow War: Armageddon for that.

I’m not fooling myself, I’ll probably get the new version of Kill Team, and I’m interested to find out more, but it is another nail in the coffin for Shadow War: Armageddon, which is a shame as I do really like that game. I know I don’t have to stop playing it (no one is forcing me), but other and newer players will probably overlook Shadow War.

What I am most excited about from the Kill Team teaser, is the different warzones they will have. The new city ruins look amazing, and each of the 3 zones (city, industrial and death world) all appear to have a game mat for them. I’m all about the scenery, as they can be used in any of the 40k based games and so I’m very interested to hear how large these gaming mats are.

What also looks good, is that you’ll be able to build a Kill Team from more than just standard troops. The video clearly shows some Space Wolves with Thunder Wolves.

They had this option in the previous version (bringing fast attack units) so this will give the game a different dynamic to Shadow War. Hopefully the option to bring more specialist units such as Dreadnoughts and Killa Kans will be available in this version.

Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait long to hear more or for its release.
