2021 Spending Plans

Since returning to the hobby in 2012 I have spent A LOT of money on shiny GW plastic.

As a result I have a very (un)healthy pile of shame mounting up in my garage.

With a new year, comes new outlooks and new plans.

So this year, I am going to try and reduce what I buy in the form of models (obviously my monthly deliveries of the Mortal Realms magazine are excluded from this).

Now normally I am quite partial to a limited release model and I will leave the option open to buying these, but my usual purchasing of models because I think GW are going to stop selling them needs to stop.

As much as I would like to go completely cold turkey and stop buying models, I just don’t think that’s feasible as there are always models that I want to get.

Now, most of my model purchases don’t tend to be new releases with the exception of Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress (fortunately, that product line has now ended and my collection is complete). This means that I should be able to put a list together of my intended purchases for the year and only buy models from this list.

This will give me that sweet feeling when buying new shiny stuff, but will also give me a measure of control over my spending. Items not on the list won’t be bought this year, with the exception of limited releases and GW books.

Here is the list that I’ve come up with:

  • Necromunda Dark Uprising
  • An environment set for Warcry (I need a board and the tokens)
  • House Orlock Gang
  • House Cawdor Gang
  • House Delaque Gang
  • Catachan Command Squad
  • Catachan Jungle Fighters
  • Kal Jericho and Scabs
  • Sector Mechanics Ferratonic Incinerator
  • Ork Stormboyz

This is not a massive list but would give me plenty of models to work on (not that I need them). It doesn’t mean that I have to buy everything on this list, only that it needs to be on the list in order to be purchased this year.

So that’s my spending plan for 2021. It’ll be interesting to see how well I stick to it. I imagine something amazing will be launched in January and this will go out of the window pretty quickly.

  1. Looks like a good place to start! I also find that in buying/selling, painting, and everything else that keeping lists like this are super helpful.

    1. Thanks Mick. For some reason, having it written down in black and white makes me want to stick with it and so far I have. I know we’re only into the 7th day of the new year, but I’ve shown great restraint!
