Kill Team 2021

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, Games Workshop has revealed the latest version of Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team.

First things first, the models look great, especially the Death Korps of Krieg.

My initial reaction was my normal “I must have this!”. Now that a few days have passed, I’ve calmed down a bit and I’m less desperate to get my hands on the boxset. Don’t get me wrong, all of the models look amazing, but I’ve recently caught a glimps of my pile of shame, and I’m probably never goning to get round to painting these new models.

I think I will wait until the units are available separately and buy as I want then. The Ork Kommandos look great, but I’ve already got some so the need for them isn’t there for me. The new Death Korps of Krieg are similarly awesome, but I’ve already got plenty of guard to keep me going for many years.

On the other hand, I think the models that most excited me were the new Ork scrap buildings. I wasn’t expecting these and I will definitely be picking up a set when they are available separately. I do love an interesting board setup and being able to create an Ork camp/base really appeals to the Narrative/Ork player in me. They should get a Kill Team environment release like we had in the previous edition.

Hopefully GW will bring back some of the older environment sets from the current version that are no longer available such as the Death World Forest kits that have disappeared. I also hope that GW release some Kill Teams like they have done with the Warcry warbands or Necromunda gangs. My gut feeling is this is where we will see the return of the Gellerpox Infected and the Elucidian Starstriders and probably a repackaging of Guant’s Ghosts.

Long before this version was announced, I was very much against getting involved with a new edition of Kill Team. I’ve bought all of the Kill Team books from the current version but so far have played a grand total of 1 game. It feels like a shame to be essentially throwing away these previous rulebooks but I dont see much use for them in the future. Maybe the missions can be transferred to the new edition?

Had the new edition kept the rules mostly the same, I definitely wouldn’t be getting on board the new version, but since it’s a completely different ruleset, my mind is a lot more open to the idea.

I’m hoping that the rules will be available digitally as I am running out of space for new rulebooks and codexes. I had hoped to make the jump to digital for 9th edition 40k, but they haven’t released them this way in order to tie in with the mobile app.

We still have a while to wait until the new edition launches so hopefully there will be even more exciting announcements before the release date.

  1. I’m planning on playing old KT for a while. I’ve got Arena, Rogue Trader, etc. and they all need playing!

  2. I would kill for more Deathworld Forest releases. xD My friends who play Krieg and Orks are thrilled with the new set and this might give me an excuse to get into Kill Team.
