Necromunda Zone Mortalis 3D Print Test

Once again I have watched a Peachy Tips video and have been inspired to do something different to what I had planned to do.

In Peachy’s most recent video, he is showing off the various Necromunda gangs that he has painted and in some of the shots you can also see his Necromunda terrain.

I was reminded that I also have some Necromunda terrain and I should really finish painting it.

Then the question hit me as to whether I should be putting the terrain on the Necromunda Zone Mortalis Tiles. If I do should I build them as complete tiles or leave everything loose for complete modularity?

A trip down the rabbit hole ensued…

I remembered a while ago that another YouTuber, Miniature Game Montage, had put out a video showing you how to build a Necromunda tile using 3D printed items, (he has recently released a second video).

Well I have a 3D printer, maybe I should give this a try?

Anyway, in an effort to decide whether I should purchase the Necromunda Zone Mortalis Floor Tiles or print my own, I decided to give the printing a try so I could compare the quality against the GW terrain I have and also see if my colours work for the floor tiles.

After a couple of hours printing and some spray paint, I was ready to go.

Floor Tile

The floor Tile came out well and the layer lines weren’t super obvious. I was worried how these would show up in my planned colour scheme.

I started slapping Mechanicus Standard Grey on the center of all of the floor panels.

Next I threw some Mournfang Brown at it.

I then decided to give some Hazard stripes a try and also put some Warlock Bronze on the central grate.

The hazard stipes needed a bit of Mournfang Brown to dull it down a bit.

Lastly it was to give it all a drybrush with Runefang Steel.

A nice quick paint job and the same way I have painted all of my walls and columns.

Column

The 3D print didn’t come out too bad once painted. When compared against other wall sections, it really shows that I haven’t drybrushed this enough, so I may have to go back and give it a bit more silver.

So, paint scheme-wise I think I over did it on the Mournfang Brown and didn’t drybrush the Runefang Steel enough. I think I need to change the colour of the floor tiles as it’s a bit samey with the grey on the wall sections as well as the floor.

Is 3D printing the way to go with Necromunda scenery? Well it is a lot cheaper, but do I want to have to print off 4 floor tiles to be able to make 1? Do I then need to glue these tiles together or do I keep them separate?  I might be able to keep them together using wall pieces across each of them, but this feels a bit fiddly to me.

The 3D columns fit better on the Floor Tiles than the GW ones and I feel that if I was to go down this route, I would need to build a complete Zone Mortalis tile, which would be less modular as well as take up more space.

However knowing how much of a pain it is to set up the Boarding Action terrain, maybe completely modularity isn’t the way to go…

Something to ponder in the future. Right now, I should get the rest of my Necromunda terrain painted for once a decision has been made.
