After seeing some posts online I was inspired to return to the Space Marine Chapter that I was painting when I returned to the hobby back in 6th edition – the Mentor Legion.
Back then, I had painted the contents of Assault on Black Reach, but I really struggled with expanding the army. At the time, I ended up focusing on Orks and Space Marines sat on the back burner. I eventually changed to a different chapter as I thought just having one colour for the armour would make it easier and quicker to get a sizable force ready for gaming.
Now that I have a few Omega Guardians painted up, I have a Space Marine army that I can call upon if I want to play with.
Once again, I have found myself questioning my choice of Space Marine colour schemes and so felt a change was in order.
With plenty of Space Marine kits in an inbuilt and unpainted state, I can paint an entire force in a different colour scheme that will be be completely different to my other Space Marine army.
After seeing a really cool version online, I was inspired to try out the Mentor Legion colour scheme on the Phobos Lieutenant. I’ve got two of these models so if I wasn’t happy with how he turned out, I had another option.
But I’ve got to say, that I am very happy with how he turned out.
My only gripe with this colour scheme (other than more time consuming than an all white or all green scheme) is that the green is too much like the Dark Angels. I plan on painting up some Dark Angels and so this will make them a bit samey.
The thing that really makes this colour scheme work is the red decals. I had previously bought the Mentor Legion decals from Games Workshop but for the life of me, I can’t find them at the moment. I therefore turned to Google and found that someone had made a set (including Lieutenant symbols), all that was left was to find out how to make your own decals.
This is just one of the models that grabbed my focus this month instead of the July Justice project. And after finishing this model, inspiration struck again…
